MSU PhonoGroup and EMA Lab

The Michigan State University (MSU) Phono Group specializes in research on the Phonology and Phonetics of human languages.

The meetings are primarily a way for faculty and students to discuss their research. The following are some of the topics that there is active research in:

• Fine-grained phonetic timing patterns using nasometric measurements and Electromagnetic Articulography.
• Computational modelling of phonetic and phonological knowledge.
• The relationship between phonological knowledge and the performance systems.
• The phonological and phonetic basis of loanword patterns in Mandarin Chinese.
• Moraic representations and their interaction with long-distance compensatory lengthening.
• Phonetic correlates of syllable structure.
• The role of simplicity in phonological and phonetic theory.

We usually meet in B-410 Wells Hall on Fridays. The exact time depends on the semester. Contact me (karthikd@msu.edu), if you are interested in attending or being part of the (email) listserv.

Meetings consist of discussion of research ideas, student/faculty presentations of current research work, workshops on professional development (paper/abstract writing, presentations, CVs and websites, …) and technical skills (R, LaTeX, Jspsych scripting, …).

Experimental space and equipment

• We have access to two experiment rooms:

  • The EMA lab (B-418 Wells Hall)
  • Multi-chamber experiment rooms with multiple Mac desktops (B-416 Wells Hall)

• Equipment:

  • Electro-magnetic Articulograph (EMA)
  • Nasometer
  • Nasal Airflow system
  • Standard audio recording equipment, and multiple desktop and laptop computers
  • Portable EEG system
